Ho to live a happy life--By Dr. Abhishek chadha

Physiotherapy is a science-based unique profession and adopts a ‘holistic’ or ‘whole person’ approach towards the health and well-being, focussing on the patient’s general lifestyle. Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice. Keeping holistic view in mind, physiotherapist seeks the patients’ involvement in their own care, through education, awareness, and participation in their treatment. Everyone can get benefit from physiotherapy at any time in his life. Physiotherapy helps to maintain health for people of all ages, helping patients to manage pain and prevent disease.

Dr. Abhishek Chadha  , Kurukshetra hereby reveals the important suggestions for the physiotherapists and prescriptions for the patients who need general as well as special advice. Due to hectic schedule and regular bad eating habits and the changed style of relaxing with TV and high-headed pillow caused many health problems in the society. Here we focus on the remedies for general problems, Cervical Patients and Low Back Pain Patients.

For good mental and physical health the stress and strain should be minimised or avoided by everyone. The patient must be assured of getting right treatment.  Daily rehabilitation is the principle of treatment, hence prolong rest should be avoided at every cost. Ignorance of physical posture causes many problems; therefore postural education is of great importance for the patients. Patients should go for regular exercises like walking, swimming, exercises to increase the spinal mobility, maintain the range of motion with exercises, exercises for back muscles as advised by physiotherapist. It is important to mention that personal hygiene is very important. One should not forget to take proper diet as advised by the physiotherapist. Patient should keep in mind the generated stress during their office hours; therefore the working hours may be reduced or patients should take breaks in the day. One should avoid the high impact exercises such as jumping or running, strenuous sporting activity and sudden uncontrolled movements. Cars are inevitable part of our daily routine but we should always use seat belts while driving. Many muscle relaxants are advised and thongs of advices are available in many forms today, but patient should follow the guidelines of his or her physiotherapist and over use of muscle relaxants must be avoided.

Fast life does not allow for appropriate rest and due to unavoidable work at office or home and  sometimes we have to work without making a break and we take Painkillers, but on should keep remember that excessive and over use of pain killers should be avoided as it affects our whole body. Due to work pressure we keep the work continues even if we feel pain but we should not make any movement if pain appears on any activity rather avoid such activity. Many persons, particularly ladies wear high heels; it causes strain in neck, low back pain and knee pain. So one should wear well fitted footwear and should avoid pointed and high heel to avoid crowding of toes and other bone problems.

Pregnancy is most important phase of life which should be cared more therefore during pregnancy; females should perform light exercises as advised by me to avoid back pains. Golden rule of life i.e. ‘Prevention is better than cure’ must be followed by everyone.

The problem of Cervical is becoming universal day by day due to excessive office and computer work. Patients should know that most of the layman or so-called experts of our society say that hard bed should be used in Cervical, but a bed that is too hard, should not be used. Although hard bed is beneficial to the patients of cervical pain but too hard bed may increase the aches and pains. Apart from this, Cervical braces may be used for a short period but continuously. Cervical braces actually serves as reminder to immobilize the neck. In cases, where pain increases with flexion, collar may be used with high part on the front and in cases where pain increases with extension of neck, collar may be used with high part on the back as advised by the physiotherapist. After doing the X-ray and to ruling out any tumour or fracture, Cervical traction should be given only to those patients who are fit for it. One must stretch the neck and moved through full range at repeated intervals during the day. It is especially advisable during reading, sitting & driving hours. One should remember always that swimming is not advisable in cervical pain syndromes and no Ice packs should be used in acute neck pains.

Patients suffering from Cervical should limit their occupational/recreational activity that causes pressure on neck and head and should not hold the head in one position for a long time.

Emergence of haste and roughness in our lives has brought many health problems and the increasing number of Low Back Pain Patients is alarming. Such patients should be very careful in every aspect of their daily routine. They should avoid the work and exercise which put pressure on the back. The problem takes long time and the prevention is the best policy for curing this problem. Correct posture is the answer of choice to prevent future recurrence. One should not stand with crossed knee. Patient should know that there should be no gap between back and the wall while sitting. One should use hard mattress when back pains aggravate on flexion, but not, if back pains aggravates on extension. Do not forget to use back rest during sitting posture and Corset/belt especially during journey. Keep focus on the general fitness of the body as it is of utmost importance to prevent recurrence of back pains. One must avoid  prolong sitting as it increases the tension on lower spines. Weight on spine in sitting position is increased by 40%. If the patient has to lift something from the floor, keep always in mind that lifting of an object from the floor should be by the sitting position and not by bending on the back.

The problem of Knee Joint pain is particularly high in the middle aged and old aged people. We should know that knee joint is the most vulnerable joint of the body hence minimum strain should be given to this joint. Overweight always harms the knee joint hence always advisable to reduce extra weight of the body. One should avoid the sudden twisting of the knee joint. Proper rest should be given to the joint when it is inflammed.

by keeping these suggestions in our mind, we can make our lives easier and better even with and in pain.
